The best free habit tracker apps for iPhone

Almost every habit tracker is free to download; the free plan is where they differ. Of the apps people ask about most, Habiter has the largest free plan — 5 habits, no account, no ads — followed by HabitKit (4 habits) and Habitify (3 habits). Streaks has no free version. Here is what each free plan really covers.

1. Habiter — the largest free plan

Free for up to 5 habits, with no time limit: streaks, one reminder per habit, the last 16 weeks of history, Home Screen widgets, a focus timer, a quit-habit counter and Apple Health automation for one habit. There is no account and no ads; habits stay on your device and sync through your own iCloud.

Pro ($2.99/month, $19.99/year or $59.99 once in the US) adds unlimited habits, a full year of history, the Apple Watch app and Health automation for every habit. Runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch. We make Habiter — see how we checked, below.

2. HabitKit — a grid of tiles for every habit

Free for up to 4 habits, with no account and no sign-up. Each habit is drawn as a grid of coloured tiles, one per day, which is what the app is built around. Widgets, charts and unlimited habits are part of Pro. It runs on iPhone and Android; there is no Apple Watch app.

3. Habitify — if you also use Android or a browser

Free for up to 3 active habits with one reminder each. You can use it as a guest on one device; syncing between devices needs a Habitify account. Apple Health automation is part of Pro, and it can also log from Strava, Fitbit and Screen Time. Runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Android and the web.

4. Productive — guided programs

Free to download with a limited number of habits; unlimited habits are a Premium feature. Known for guided programs and challenges, with location-based reminders in Premium. Has an Apple Watch app and an Android version.

5. Atoms — the Atomic Habits app

James Clear's official app, built around the ideas in Atomic Habits, with short lessons. Free to download, with Pro at $4.99/month or $39.99/year; we couldn't confirm the free plan's limits. iPhone and Apple Watch.

Not free: Streaks

Streaks costs $5.99 once, with no subscription and no free version. If you'd rather pay a small one-time price than live within a free plan, it's a long-running, Apple Design Award-winning app that tracks up to 24 tasks on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch.
